FAQs

What does a book designer do?

1

A book designer handles the visual and structural decisions that turn a manuscript into a finished, publishable product. That includes interior layout and typesetting (how the text is set on the page), cover design (the visual identity of the book), and production preparation (making sure the files are correctly set up for print or digital distribution). A good book designer works with the content rather than against it, building typographic systems that support reading and reflect the nature of the material.

How much does professional book design cost?

2

Depends on the type of project, the word count, and the level of visual complexity. Interior layout for a reading book starts from $500. Picture book design starts from $1,200. Art book design, which involves high image density and complex layout systems, starts from $1900. Cover design is scoped separately. Projects outside these standard ranges, such as reports, white papers, or books with extensive data visualisation, are quoted individually.

How long does book design take?

3

Timelines depend on the scope and complexity of the project. A standard reading book interior typically takes two to four weeks from confirmed brief to final files. Art books and highly visual publications take longer. Rush timelines are possible in some cases and are priced accordingly. The most accurate way to get a timeline estimate is to share your brief, including word count, trim size, and any complexity factors.

What is the difference between book cover design and interior layout?

4

Cover design is the visual identity of the book: the front cover, spine, and back cover, designed to capture the tone of the content and hold attention on the shelf or in a thumbnail. Interior layout is the typographic and structural system that organises the text and visuals inside the book, including the grid, margins, type hierarchy, spacing, and all the decisions that shape how a reader moves through the content. Both disciplines require different skills and different tools, which is why they are scoped independently. They can be designed separately or as an integrated project.

Do I need a professional book designer if I am self-publishing?

5

Self-publishing platforms like Amazon KDP and IngramSpark accept files formatted to specific technical standards. While templates exist, they rarely account for the typographic decisions that make a book comfortable to read and credible to hold. A professionally designed book signals quality before a reader has read a single word: the margins, the type size, the leading, the hierarchy. For authors who care about how their book is received, professional design is not an optional extra.

What book design services do you offer?

6

Three core service areas: cover design, available in Essential, Exploratory, and Extended tiers depending on the level of creative exploration; interior layout for reading books, picture books, and art books, each scoped to the visual density and complexity of the content; and integrated book design, which combines cover and interior into a single cohesive project built to the same visual logic. I also design white papers, reports, and illustrated publications for professional teams.

What files will I receive at the end of the project?

7

All projects are delivered as print-ready PDF files set up to your printer's specifications. InDesign source files (INDD) are available as an add-on if you need the original production files for future edits or reprints. Files can be prepared for specific platforms including Amazon KDP, IngramSpark, and offset printing.

Do you work with print-on-demand platforms like KDP or IngramSpark?

8

Yes. Files are set up to the technical specifications of your platform, including bleed, margin requirements, embedded fonts, and colour profiles. If you are unsure which platform is right for your project, I can advise during the brief stage.

What is the difference between a Creative Direction and a Revision Round?

9

A Creative Direction is an initial design proposal: a complete layout concept or visual direction developed from scratch for your project. Depending on your service tier, you may receive one or more Creative Directions to choose from. A Revision Round is a consolidated set of feedback applied to your chosen direction, refining it rather than replacing it. New concepts or significantly different visual approaches count as additional Creative Directions, not revisions.

How is the design scope calculated?

10

Scope is based on word count, page count, and the visual complexity of your content. Standard service tiers include defined page ranges (for example, 80 to 240 pages for a reading book) and a set complexity level. Projects with high image density, multiple languages, extensive data visualisation, or experimental layouts may require a custom scope. The brief form on this site is designed to capture exactly the information needed for an accurate quote.

Can you design books in Spanish, German, or other languages?

11

Yes. I am fully bilingual in Spanish and English and manage the typographic requirements of both languages without approximation. I also have experience laying out German content and can handle the specific spacing, hyphenation, and character requirements of the language. Swedish is my mother tongue, and while most of my professional work is in English and Spanish, I can handle Nordic scripts. Multilingual projects and bilingual editions are welcome.

What happens if I need more pages or revisions than my package includes?

12

Additional pages are available at a fixed rate per page, between 2 and 10 USD depending on complexity. Additional revision rounds beyond those included in your tier are billed at an hourly rate. If you think your project may exceed the standard scope, flag it in the brief so I can quote accordingly from the start.

Do you provide support during the printing process?

13

I do not manage print orders directly, but I deliver print-ready files set up to your printer's exact specifications. If technical questions come up during printing, I am available to liaise with your printer or adjust the files as needed.
